To promote Samsung’s mid-range Galaxy A5 smartphone, we created a touring game that travelled to six Australian Netball games.

Players had 30 seconds to throw balls through a set of targets, with a new target picked at random and highlighted with flashing LEDs every few seconds. Behind the scenes, an Android app on the phone started each game and displayed the prompts. A desktop app talked to it over a peer-to-peer network and mirrored the action on two 55-inch screens, and a DMX interface controlled the LEDs around each target.

We built the underlying application framework and the DMX controller, oversaw the mobile and desktop apps, and toured with the experience.

Built with Haxe, using Starling for GPU rendering and Robotlegs for structure. Hardware: a Samsung A5, a DMX PRO Mk2 with LEDs and drivers, a PC, two 55-inch screens and a local network.

Key features

Thirty seconds, one target at a time

Each player had 30 seconds to throw balls through a set of targets. Every few seconds a new target was picked at random and lit up with flashing LEDs.

The phone runs the show

An Android app on the Galaxy A5 itself started each game and showed the action prompts, putting the product in players' hands.

Two big screens, in sync

A desktop app mirrored the game on two large-format displays over a local peer-to-peer network, so the crowd could follow along.

LEDs driven from code

A custom DMX controller interface drove the LED lights around each target, in step with the game.
